John Francis Murphy's Paintings adorn the walls of America's most prestigious museums. Referred to as the "American Corot" because of the similarity between his style and that of Camille Corot ( French, 1796 - 1875 ), one the the leading French Barbizon Painters, John Francis Murphy is increasingly recognized today as one of the premier American Tonalist Painters of the late 19th and early 20th century. In my opinion, Murphy's work surpasses that of Corot. By comparison, Corot's work seems heavy handed, where Murphy seemed to breathe and delicately float his later applications of paint onto the canvas. This, coupled with his highly developed techniques for laying down a sort of impasto or heavily sculpted "ground" beneath the unifying surface colors, make his work extremely dynamic and highly sought after.
